Are you a pessimist or an optimist? Do you always look on the bright side of any situation or do you focus on the downside? The category you fall in depends on whether you have a naturally positive or negative disposition in your life. This disposition depends on the constant stream of thoughts that run through your mind. Therefore, positive thinking is an optimistic attitude characterized by the conscious focus on the good in any given situation.

What is the big deal with positive thinking?

Positive thinking is a great tool for coping with the good and the bad in life. It is not an excuse to give a blind eye to reality or to live with your head in the “clouds”. Maintaining a positive attitude has no downside. Research has shown that staying positive does play a part in mental and physical health. According to the Mayo Clinic the physical health benefits that positive thinking may provide include:

  • Increased life span

  • Lower rates of depression

  • Lower levels of distress

  • Greater resistance to the common cold

  • Better psychological and physical well-being

  • Better cardiovascular health and reduced risk of death from cardiovascular disease

  • Better coping skills during hardships and times of stress

A positive mind is a healthy mind. Thinking positively comes with the following mental health benefits:

  • More creativity

  • Greater problem-solving skill

  • Clearer thinking

  • Better mood

  • Less depression

Positive thinking is not limited to the benefits listed here. There is an undeniable power that comes with positive thinking – the power to create outcomes that you want.

What do you suppose successful and happy people think about all day long?

Successful, health, happy people focus their thoughts on desired outcomes in their lives, and how to achieve those outcomes, most of the time. They do not waste “brain calories” on mindless negative chatter. This is the power of a positive attitude that is truly transformational and can change your entire life!

How do You Develop Positive Thinking?

Good news! Optimism, the key ingredient to a better life, is a learnable quality. Take the law of cause and effect – if you do, say and act like how other healthy, optimistic, happy people, with positive attitudes do, act and say, you will soon take on their persona, feel the same way, enjoy similar experiences and get the same results in life.

“Imitation is not just the sincerest form of flattery - it's the sincerest form of learning.” ― George Bernard Shaw

Here a few tips to developing a positive attitude:

  • Keep your mind on what you want in your life and constantly think of ways to get it. Form clear goals and be diligent in the pursuit of these goals – don’t cheat yourself

  • Look for the good or the silver lining in a problem or difficult situation – success is not permanent and failure is not fatal. You win or you learn.

You can train your mind to think Positive

The mind is an amazing tool with enough capacity to only focus on one thought at a time – choose to focus on uplifting thoughts. Over a period of time, the neural pathways in your mind will rewire themselves and you will develop a new habit.

Negative thoughts only have power over you if you choose to respond negatively and by default, create a negative outcome. You have a choice in how you react to a negative thought. Focus on the positive response or positive outcome when you demoralizing events occur. Being happy is a choice!

Harnessing the power of positive thinking can be your secret weapon that can help you change your life for the better. Please leave a comment below about your experience with positive thinking and how it has impacted your life or share the struggles that you have had with developing a positive attitude – you never know, you experiences can help inspire someone.
